Pre-Existing Conditions And Can’t Afford COBRA – How I Finally Got Health Insurance

Once upon a time, I found myself in a quest for health insurance. You see, the policy we had was provided through my employer. When I lost my job, the only way to maintain coverage was to pay COBRA payments. They were SO VERY expensive and I wasn’t able to do it. I lost my health insurance coverage as a result.

I got some quotes and applied for coverage with a local insurance agent. That agent had a website that I had to go on to fill out the online application. It was easy enough.

After I submitted the application we were informed by the agent that we had been declined. When I was filling out the application I listed a few minor medical issues that I had dealt with throughout my life. I guess the insurance company considered those “pre-existing” conditions and declined our application.

I was at a loss. I needed insurance but couldn’t afford COBRA. I found a website called Health Insurance Anthem Blue Cross. I filled out the application there and was contacted by the agent for Blue Cross. He told me that I could apply as a group and I wouldn’t need to worry about the “pre-existing” conditions – that I couldn’t be declined. My wife and I had an LLC that we filled a few years prior so we used that LLC to call ourselves a “group” and submitted the application accordingly.

We had to show proof that the LLC was active and that we were, in fact, using it to run a business. A week later we had health insurance! It was a really great plan actually. It paid out at 100% after a nominal deductible was met. That year we had a lot of medical bills (including the birth of my 4th child) so we met the deductible very quickly and everything else was paid for by the insurance company at 100%.

It’s very convenient to apply for health insurance online but I think it’s also very important to have a live agent that can guide you through the process and answer questions along the way. This site gave us the best of both worlds.
